A complete Baduanjin includes eight separate exercises, each addressing a different physical area and qi meridian. In traditional Chinese Medicine, meridians support the flow of qi and other fundamental substances in the body.

Knitting can decrease stress, increase self-esteem, and improve focus and memory. It is not about performance or perfection. Gilda's KnitKarma Club serves as a welcome opportunity to experience the health benefits of knitting while finding friendship along the way.

Bring your own project, or we have yarn, needles and ideas.  All skill levels are welcome.

From our instructor Shari Porte "I began knitting in my 30's. Over the years, I have knitted many sweaters that are a bit oversized, scarves that are a tad too long, and gloves that are fingerless. I am an above average knitter but not a master knitter. Present day, I like to keep it simpler and knit straightforward scarves while I stream. I am looking forward to meeting up with other knitters, marveling at their choices of color and texture, and helping to rescue a dropped stitch or two :-)"

Cooking Class: Gnocchi with Roasted Red Pepper Cheese Sauce Time 6:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Wednesday, September 4 @ 6pm Central via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make Gnocchi with Roasted Red Pepper Cheese Sauce. You can follow along and cook during class, or just observe as a lecture.

What You'll Need:

  • - Ingredients & Prep: If you’ll be cooking this dish along with the chef during class: Read through the Recipe Packet (PDF), purchase any ingredients you need, and complete the prep work before class begins.

About Chef Michael Solovey:

Chef Michael Solovey started cooking at a young age under the tutelage of his Mother, a refined, self-taught culinarian. He would later graduate magna cum laude from Le Cordon Bleu at Scottsdale Culinary Institute before moving to Shanghai, China in 2008. Over the course of five years working in the food and beverage industry in Asia, Chef Michael played various roles in opening 24 food and beverage establishments including his very own Eastern European inspired restaurant, Bloc.

In the past seven years, Michael has served as Resident Chef for Sur La Table and Chef/Cooking School Director for The Boelter Companies in Glendale, Wisconsin. He is now the owner of Sage Harvest Cooking School. He has taught over 1,800 classes to over 10,000 students. His pedagogy implements approachable science to help his students understand why different cooking techniques render a variety of results in the kitchen; all for the sake of developing students' culinary instinct. Although Chef Michael personally writes and curates all of the recipes used in his classes, his approach is decidedly anti-recipe as his aim is to empower everyone from the novice foodie to the seasoned industry professional to take confident control of their diet, health, and wellness by cooking amazing food.

Within months after chemo had ended, she became an Amherst Writer and Artist facilitator of Write to Heal, a writing group for cancer survivors and caregivers at Gilda’s Club in Middleton, WI. In traditional Chinese Medicine, meridians support the flow of qi and other fundamental substances in the body.

There are both standing and seated versions of Baduanjin in history, but the standing version is more popular among modern practitioners. Studies show that practicing Baduanjin regularly is beneficial for quality of life, sleep quality, balance, handgrip strength, trunk flexibility, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and resting heart rate.

Cooking Class: Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna Sandwich with Citrus Aioli Time 11:00 AM Location Virtual - assigned links

Friday, September 20 @ 11am Central via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna Sandwich with Citrus Aioli, Avocado, and Arugula.

Tai Chi Time 9:00 AM Location Zoom

Every Thursday @ 9am - 9:30am via Zoom

A short (14 minute) practice to breathe, move start your day off.

Baduanjin (Eight Pieces of Brocade or Eight Skilken Movements) is one of the most common forms of Tai Chi exercise that serves to improve human health. A complete Baduanjin includes eight separate exercises, each addressing a different physical area and qi meridian. In traditional Chinese Medicine, meridians support the flow of qi and other fundamental substances in the body.

About the Presenter: Justin Studler, PhD

I am currently a post-doctoral Health Psychology Fellow in the Health Psychology Department at the University of Wisconsin - Madison Hospital and Clinics. I completed my Internship Residency in Health Psychology at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin prior to coming to UW-Madison for my Fellowship. Throughout my practicum, Internship, and Fellowship training experiences, I have worked with cancer patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting for both short- and long-term therapy. I have worked with individuals diagnosed with a multitude of cancers in a variety of positions (e.g., initial diagnosis, treatment, recovery, end-of-life care, etc.) throughout their cancer journey. I consider myself immensely fortunate to work with this population as I have learned a great deal and built many meaningful relationships.

Frankly Speaking about Cancer: GI Side Effects of Breast Cancer Treatment (PUBLIC) Time 6:00 PM Location Virtual - assigned links

Wednesday, Oct 9 @ 6-7:30 pm CT via Zoom

This program was created for people diagnosed with breast cancer. The materials educate patients and their caregivers on the potential GI side effects of breast cancer treatment, symptom management, and specific ways to navigate the emotional impact of this disease.

About the Presenter: Dr. Malinda West

Malinda West, MD, MS, is a UW Health medical oncologist and an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Division of Hematology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care.

Dr. West is specially trained to diagnose and treat patients with cancer using advanced treatments such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy. She enjoys teaching fellows, residents and medical students and conducting research with the goal of improving treatments for people living with cancer. Treatments are tailored to each patient’s specific cancer and individual goals, and are revisited throughout the cancer treatment course.

As she works to provide patients with the highest quality care, Dr. West is inspired by American astronomer and astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson, who said, "I am driven by two main philosophies: Know more today about the world than I knew yesterday, and lessen the suffering of others.”

When not caring for patients, Dr. West enjoys baking, hiking, biking, playing tennis and spending time with her family.

Cooking Class: Cheese and Broccoli Casserole Time 11:00 AM Location Virtual - assigned links

Friday, October 11 @ 11am Central via Zoom

Description:

Join this online cooking class where Chef Michael Solovey will teach us how to make a delicious cheese and broccoli casserole. You can follow along and cook during class, or just observe as a lecture.

What You'll Need:

  • - Ingredients & Prep: We'll add a recipe packet closer to the class date and will email a copy to all registered attendees.

Her daughter Josie has been an integral part of Jamie’s healing not only through shaving her own head but also by painting and pouring mud on her mother’s head. Everyday Adventures: Spooky Season Night Hike with Naturalist Time 6:00 PM Location Table Bluff

Monday, Oct 21 @ 6-8pm

Table Bluff - Ice Age National Scenic Trail, Cross Plains, WI 53528

Are you curious what happens in the woods after dark? Join us on a fun (and maybe a little spooky) all-ages night hike at the Ice Age Trail- Table Bluff! We'll be joined by Eric Volden, Naturalist, as we explore the prairie, wetlands, and woods around Table Bluff at dusk and after dark.

We could see bats, moths, amphibians, owls, and more!

This trail is rated as moderately difficult. The ascent to the top of Table Bluff will take place before sunset, and it is short, but narrow and steep. Once we reach the top of the bluff, the trail will be fairly level. Our descent back to the parking lot will take place after dark, but we will plan to take the paved service road back for safety. We will hike at a slow pace for both safety and to make sure that we see as much as possible.

Please plan to wear long pants and sturdy footwear. We ask everyone who registers to bring their own flashlight or headlamp.

We will plan to meet in the parking lot off of Scheele Road.

There are both standing and seated versions of Baduanjin in history, but the standing version is more popular among modern practitioners.
